DOX Centre for Contemporary Art is an independent institution situated in Prague-Holešovice presenting international contemporary art, architecture and design.
Name
The name DOX derives from the Greek word “doxa” (opinion, glory, belief, way of seeing, reputation) and paradoxon. It alludes to the ambitions of contemporary art to question any formal or contextual barriers while also referring to the nearby docks and the industrial heritage connected to the center’s architecture.
Motive
The Czech Republic lacks an independent institution focused on contemporary art, architecture and design. Contemporary art requires both flexibility and large exhibition spaces that serve large installations as well as various media. As a modern multifunctional centre, DOX fulfils these criteria. Its size and capacity is unique in the Czech Republic.
